One Unbroken Stream
Yoga Sutras 3.2
Meaning · English
In that same place, the awareness of the object runs on as one unbroken stretch, each moment the same as the last. This is meditation.
Three words carry the sutra. Tatra means "there": the very place or object where attention was just bound. Pratyaya is what is presented to awareness at a given moment, the single content of the mind: an image, a sound, a thought of the object. Ekatanata means "one-stretchedness": the same content drawn out in a line, without a break. Dhyana, the name given to this, comes from a root for contemplating. So the plain sense: attention is fixed on one place, and then the awareness of that place continues, moment after moment, as a single strand. Nothing else cuts in. It is not a new object. It is the same object, lasting. Patanjali says this because the mind normally jumps. A first step, attention fixed on one place, can still be a series of separate grips. The sutra names what comes after: the grips join into a flow. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes it this way: the content of awareness in that place goes on as an even stream, not touched by any other content. The commentators who follow him read the word the same way.
Honey poured from a spoon falls as one smooth thread, not as drops. Each part of the thread is the same honey, joined to the part before it. Attention bound to an object is the first drop landing. Meditation is the thread that follows, unbroken.
1. Choose one small plain object today, such as a cup or a candle flame, and sit with it for five minutes. 2. Look at it and let your attention rest there. When a thought about something else comes, notice that it has come, and return to the object. 3. Notice how long a stretch passes before the thread breaks. Do not count or judge it. Only notice the length. 4. Try again tomorrow at the same hour.
