Only the Object Remains
Yoga Sutras 3.3
Meaning · English
When the object alone shines in the mind, and the mind seems emptied of its own form, that is samadhi.
Three words carry this sutra. Artha is the object, the thing meditated on. Matra means only, nothing but. Nirbhasa means shining forth, appearing. So the first half says: the object alone appears. Svarupa is one's own form, the mind's own nature as a knower. Shunya means empty. The word iva, as if, matters: the mind is not actually emptied. It only seems empty of itself. Samadhi is the name for this state. Taken whole, the sutra says that when meditation deepens until the object fills awareness and the sense of being the one who watches drops out of view, that is samadhi. Patanjali says this because the two sutras before it describe a mind that is bound to one place and then held there in an unbroken stream. A student could ask what comes after steady holding. This sutra answers: the holding becomes so complete that the meditator is no longer noticed. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way, describing the mind as taking on only the form of the object, as though it had lost its own. Later commentators, including Vachaspati Mishra, stress that the as-if means the knower is not destroyed, only unnoticed.
Watching a film so completely that the seat, the room and your own hands are forgotten, and only the story is there. The film is the object. Forgetting the seat is the mind seeming empty of itself, though you never left your chair.
1. Pick one ordinary object today, such as a candle flame, a leaf or a cup of tea. Sit with it for five minutes. 2. Keep looking at only that object. When thoughts about yourself or the day appear, return to the object. 3. At the end, notice whether there was any stretch when you were not aware of yourself looking. Do not try to force it. Just note it.
