Dattatreya Teaches Parasurama the Essence: Consciousness as Mirror
Tripura Rahasya 22.56
The story · English
Dattatreya was finishing an old answer. The knowers, he said, have no action left, because they have reached fullness. They see nothing apart from the Self, which is awareness. So how could any action remain? The fire of consciousness has burned everything to ash, and nothing is left over. Whatever deeds people seem to see in them are like a magician's show, seen only by other people. Then he said, 'Listen, Brahmin, and I will tell you the secret briefly. The vision of Shiva is the very same vision the knowers have. There is not the slightest difference, and this is true beyond doubt. So no action clings to the knowers at all.'
Hearing this account, which Hemangada had given, Vasuman was freed from every doubt. His mind grew clear with understanding. The princes and the others honored him, and he returned to his own place. The two princes also reached their own city. Having heard all this, Rama asked the sage, the son of Atri, one more thing. 'Master, I have heard this knowledge from your own mouth. My doubt is gone, and I have understood that great state. Awareness runs through everything and shines everywhere, as you said from the start. Yet please tell me the essence once more, in brief, and more plainly. I want to hold it with my whole being.'
Atri's son answered, 'Listen, Rama. I will tell you the essence of it all once more. Supreme consciousness is the sovereign lady, complete in her sense of I. By her freedom, and by her power of making the impossible happen, she shows the world, as a mirror shows a reflection. Here is how, step by step. She shows her own nature in two parts. In one part the sense of I appears incomplete. The other part then goes out from that I and becomes outer and unshown. This is by that same seeing, descendant of Bhrigu. The part with the incomplete sense of I is called Sadashiva.'
'Then, wishing again to create many kinds of worlds, Sadashiva takes the unshown as his body and thinks, This I am. That thought makes him Ishvara, the Lord. Filled with that pride in the unshown, he becomes threefold, as Rudra, Hari and Druhina, who is Brahma. They bring about the seer, the seen, and the whole gathered mass. There are many kinds of orders, and many Haris who tend toward dissolving them, and many Rudras too. That is how the world works. It only shines, Rama, like a reflection in a mirror. Nothing has really been born. Supreme consciousness stays whole in her sense of I, always.'
'Take yourself, Rama. Your sense of I fills your whole body. Yet the eyes and other senses each have their own sense of I, and each does its own work. In the same way, supreme awareness rests in a full I, while appearing to rest in the incomplete I of every being from Sadashiva down to a blade of grass. You, as the body, cannot grasp color or taste by yourself. You grasp them by becoming one with them. So Sadashiva knows and acts within everything. But your formless nature, the support of all, knows nothing and does nothing. Supreme awareness likewise sees not even a trace of difference. The whole world shines in her, as a reflection does in a mirror.'
'Here you, I and others are seers made of seeing. When the seen things are absent, only pure awareness remains. A mirror with no pots before it is simply a clear mirror. So when imagined appearances are wiped away, supreme awareness remains, one without a second, a mass of great bliss. Everyone wants happiness, because happiness is the Self. The pleasure of the senses is only a trace of it. It shows in relief from a heavy burden and in deep sleep. Fools do not know this great joy as their own. They see difference, because what reveals it differs. In a mirror, things look separate until you know they are reflections.'
'Once you know it is a reflection, you see that nothing is apart from the mirror. In the same way the world is only the Self, as pots are clay, ornaments are gold and statues are stone. To say the world does not exist is an incomplete view, Bhargava. Denial does not work. How could a mere curse of it is not dissolve the world? A city in a mirror exists by the mirror's nature, and the world is one form of consciousness. There is no bondage and no liberation, no seeker and no means. Tripura, the undivided power of awareness, shines as knowledge and ignorance, bondage, freedom and the way.'
'This is all there is to know, Rama, and I have told you the whole path of knowing from the start. One who knows it well never grieves again. Hearing it once gives firm understanding. Even for a dull mind, hearing it two or three times will do so. Hearing it clears away sin, writing it removes faulty vision, worshiping it purifies the mind, and studying it dissolves dullness. Whoever thinks it through and knows the Self in all things is freed. Otherwise there is bondage. And that, too, is Tripura herself, the syllable Hrim.'
