Rama Weary Before Ravana
Aditya Hridayam 1
Meaning · English
Then Rama, worn out by the fighting, stood on the battlefield lost in thought, and saw Ravana before him, ready once more for battle.
The scene opens in the middle of a war. Rama has been fighting for a long time and is worn out. He is not charging or shouting. He is standing still, turning something over in his mind. The word for his state means anxious thought, the kind that comes when strength runs low and the hardest part is still ahead. Right then he sees Ravana in front of him, standing ready for battle. Weariness on one side, an enemy prepared on the other.
A runner near the end of a long race slows at the foot of the last hill, legs heavy, and looks up at it. Nothing has gone wrong, but the road ahead now asks more than the body has left. That is Rama's moment: effort spent behind him, the hardest stretch in front, and a pause to think.
