Agastya Steps Down to Speak
Aditya Hridayam 2
Meaning · English
Agastya, the revered sage, had come with the gods to watch the battle. He went up to Rama and spoke to him.
The battle has an audience. The gods have gathered to watch, and Agastya, a sage honored enough to be called revered, has come along with them. Then he leaves their company and walks over to Rama himself. The line closes on the plain fact that he spoke. What he said is held back for the next line. For now we learn only who is about to speak and to whom: a respected sage from among the onlookers, turning to the tired fighter on the field.
At a school race, the families sit packed in the stands. A grandfather gets up, makes his way down the steps, and crosses the grass to the boy bent over at the starting line, catching his breath. Agastya does the same: one of the watching crowd of gods, he comes down to Rama in person.
