Having Heard Everything

Vijnana Bhairava 1

Meaning · English

Lord, I have heard all of it: everything that came from the Rudrayamala, the threefold division told without leaving anything out, sorted step by step from the essential to what is more essential still.

Devi opens by saying what she already has. Three words carry it. Rudrayamala names the body of teaching she has been given: yamala means a pairing or union, and Rudra is a name of Shiva, so this is teaching rooted in Shiva joined with his power. Trika means threefold, a teaching sorted into three parts. Sara means essence, and the verse says she heard it divided from essence to a deeper essence, so each layer was already a sifting of the one before. Now the clauses in order. She has heard everything. It came from that source. It was laid out in its threefold form. Nothing was left out. It was ranked from the core outward and inward. She says all this to Bhairava, whom she addresses as Lord. Notice what she does not say. She does not say she has understood, or reached anything. She reports that the hearing is complete. That is why the verse works as a doorway: a full account has been given and she is still standing in her own ordinary moment, so the question that follows has to be put to that moment itself, and Bhairava's answer will turn back to it.

Picture someone who has studied a map of a city until every street, district and landmark is named and ranked by importance. Then she turns to the guide and asks to be shown the actual door of the house. The map is the complete hearing. The wish for the door is what Devi is about to ask.
