अद्यापि न निवृत्तो मे संशयः परमेश्वर । किं रूपं तत्त्वतो देव शब्दराशिकलामयम्
Meaning · English
Even now, Lord, my doubt has not left me. What is your true form, God? Is it made of the multitude of sounds and letters, in parts?
Devi has heard everything and still says her doubt has not gone. She asks one plain question: what is your form in truth? Take the key words one at a time. Samshaya is doubt, literally a place where the mind is thrown two ways at once. Parameshvara means the highest lord, the one she is addressing. Tattvatah means in reality, as it actually is, apart from how it is described. Shabda-rashi-kala-maya means made of a heap of sounds and their parts: shabda is sound, rashi a heap, kala a fragment, maya made of. So she asks whether his real nature is the whole mass of syllables and their pieces, the stuff of mantra and teaching. Every clause carries weight. She says even now, so the earlier teaching did not close the matter. She says true form, so she wants what lies under the descriptions. She offers one candidate, sound in parts, to test it. The text's own logic is that a question this honest is the doorway. The answer Bhairava gives to such questions starts from ordinary moments, opened from inside, not from somewhere far away. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, since it is not available to me.
Picture someone who has been handed a full recipe book and read every page, then stands in the kitchen and asks what the dish actually tastes like. The pages are all there, yet the taste is not in them. Devi is the cook asking past the written words, wondering if his nature is only the letters on the page.
