Praise Before the Answer

Vijnana Bhairava 7

Meaning · English

Be gracious to me, lord, and cut away my doubt, all of it. Bhairava says: Well asked, well asked, beloved. What you have asked is the essence of the tantra.

The verse has two voices. Devi ends her question with a plea: prasada, which means grace or favor, and nistesham, meaning without remainder. She asks Bhairava to cut samshaya, doubt, completely. Not thin it out. Cut it. Then Bhairava begins to speak. He says sadhu twice, a word meaning good, rightly done, and he repeats it for weight. He calls her priye, beloved. Then he names what she asked: tantrasara, the essence of the tantra, the core of the whole teaching. So the question is not a side issue. Her doubts in the earlier verses, about how the highest reality can be both beyond form and present in form, go straight to the center of the matter. The verse also shows how the teaching opens: it starts from an honest doubt, spoken aloud, and is answered by someone who treats the doubt as valuable. Nothing here is a practice yet. It is the hinge between asking and answering. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, so no particular reading of his is claimed.

A student keeps pressing a teacher on the one thing in the lesson that does not add up. The teacher puts down the chalk and says, that is the exact point everything else hangs on. The stubborn doubt turns out to be the doorway into the subject, not an interruption of it.
