Like a Conjurer's Trick

Vijnana Bhairava 9

Meaning · English

Therefore, goddess, know it as without substance: like a magician's net, like a dream, like the false city of the gandharvas that the mind mistakes for real.

The verse gives three comparisons for the world of appearances. Indrajala, the magician's net, is a show that looks solid while it lasts. Svapna is a dream, fully real to the one inside it. Gandharvanagara is the city of celestial musicians that the eye sees in the clouds, with towers and walls and no ground under them. The first word, asarata, is made of a, without, and sara, essence or sap. It means having no core, like a husk with the grain gone. Bhrama, the last word, is a mistaking, a turning in error. Read clause by clause: because it has no core, know it as a conjurer's display, as a dream, and as a cloud-city taken for a real one. Nothing here says the world is absent. It says the world is taken for something harder than it is. The way in is through that very ordinary world, since the same moment that looks solid is the one that can be looked into and found hollow of fixed substance. Shivopadhyaya reads these three as showing that what appears has no separate being apart from Bhairava.

Think of a sunset sky where a bank of cloud looks exactly like a mountain range, with ridges and snow and a valley between. You can plan a hike through it. Then the light shifts and it comes apart. The world is the cloud range: vivid and convincing, but with no rock inside it.
