Teaching for Confused Minds

Vijnana Bhairava 10

Meaning · English

For the sake of meditation, for minds gone astray, for those who live in the show of ritual action, this has been described, and only this: for people whose selves are beaten down by their own thought-constructions.

Start with four words. Dhyana is meditation, the mind held on one thing. Bhranta means wandering, turned the wrong way. Here it describes the buddhi, the deciding mind, which has lost its bearings. Kriyadambara joins kriya, action, with dambara, a drumbeat or display. It is ritual that is loud and busy and performed for show. Vikalpa is the mind cutting what is whole into this and that, then piling thought on thought. Nihata means struck down. Now the clauses. The forms of Bhairava just described were given for the sake of meditation. They were given to people whose minds are confused, who live inside showy ritual, and whose selves are flattened by constant thought-making. The word for 'only' matters. It marks the description as a concession, made for a particular kind of listener, and not as the whole account. Bhairava is telling Devi why he spoke in forms at all. The mind that asks is the busy, thought-bound one, so it gets something to hold. The ordinary moment, crowded with thinking, is where the teaching begins. It does not wait for a quieter one.

A man gives a lost traveler a sketch on a napkin: a few lines, a church, a bridge. The traveler can finally move. The napkin is not the town. Likewise the described forms of Bhairava are drawn for a mind that cannot walk without a sketch, and they are not the place itself.
