Akrura's Vision

Bhagavata Purana 10.40 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

Akrura bowed low before Narayana, the eternal and indestructible source of everything. He acknowledged that from the lotus of the Lord's navel, Brahma himself once emerged. Akrura looked upon the world and saw that everything—the earth, water, fire, air, and ether—along with the mind and the senses, were all parts of the Lord's own body. He realized that these elements, being inert, could not know the Lord's true nature. Even Brahma, bound by the qualities of material nature, did not know the Lord's true form, which lay far beyond those qualities.

Akrura reflected on the many ways people seek the Divine. He noted that yogis worship the Great Being as the Lord of all, while others use the three Vedas or perform elaborate sacrifices to reach Him. Some have renounced the world entirely, seeking the Lord through the sacrifice of knowledge. Others, absorbed in Him and following the rules He Himself had spoken, worship Him as the one form behind the many. He admitted that even those who follow different paths, such as the way of Shiva, are ultimately seeking the same one God. Like rivers that flow from the mountains and are filled by the rains, all these different paths eventually merge into the single ocean of the Supreme Lord.

In a moment of deep devotion, Akrura envisioned the entire cosmos as the Lord's physical form. He saw the fire as His mouth, the earth as His feet, the sun as His eye, and the sky as His navel. The directions were His ears, the heavens His head and the chief gods His arms. The oceans were His belly and the wind His breath. He saw the trees and herbs as the hairs of the Lord's skin, the clouds as the hair of His head, the mountains as His bones and nails, and the day and night as the blinking of His eyes. The rain was the manifestation of His potency. This vast universe, crowded with countless living beings, was like gnats inside an udumbara fig or leeches in water.

Akrura then recalled the various forms the Lord had taken in play, whose glory the worlds, their sorrows washed away, sang with joy. He offered his salutations to the Fish who moved in the waters of dissolution, and to the Horse-necked one who slew the demons Madhu and Kaitabha. He bowed to the great Tortoise who bore Mandara, to the Boar who lifted the earth, and to the Lion who removed the fear of the righteous. He remembered Vamana, who measured the three worlds in three steps, Parashurama, who cut down the proud kshatriyas, and the hero of the Raghu clan who brought an end to Ravana. He praised Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha, bowed to the pure Buddha who bewildered the demons, and finally to Kalki, who would slay kings grown like barbarians.

Overwhelmed, Akrura confessed his own confusion. He admitted that he had been blinded by the Lord's maya, wandering in the illusion of 'I' and 'mine' through the cycles of karma. He felt as though he had been dreaming, chasing shadows and ignoring the truth, like a fool who leaves water close at hand, hidden only by the plants that grow on it, to chase a mirage. He felt his mind was fragile, tossed about by desires and distractions. With a humble heart, he surrendered at the feet of the Lord, knowing that such grace is hard to find. He prayed to the Lord of all senses, Hrisikesha, and the infinite power of the Brahman, begging Him to protect the devotee who had taken refuge at His feet.
