He also reaches the rank of raja yoga; there is no doubt of it. From kumbhaka, the holding of breath, comes the waking of kundalini. From that waking the sushumna becomes free of obstruction, and success in hatha is born.

The verse is a chain of three links, and it helps to take the terms one at a time. Kumbhaka is the held breath, the pause after the inhale or the exhale. Kundalini is the tradition's name for a dormant power, pictured as a coiled serpent asleep at the base of the spine. Sushumna is the central channel, one of the nadis, the subtle pathways the tradition says prana moves along. Prana is the life-force the breath is said to carry. These are the tradition's account, not anatomy. The Pradipika says the holding of breath wakes kundalini. The commentary reads the word for waking plainly: it is the breaking of sleep, so kundalini is roused from her sleep. Once she is roused, the sushumna is said to become anargala, without a bolt or bar, an unobstructed passage. The text names the result as hatha siddhi, success in hatha. It adds that the practitioner also reaches the rank of raja yoga, and it says there is no doubt about this. The verse gives no reason beyond the sequence itself. It does not say how long to hold, how many rounds to take, or how to know the waking has happened. The verses around it speak of the kumbhaka that comes by itself, without effort. A long forced hold can bring dizziness or strain, and a beginner is not asked to hold at all. The verse asks only that the order of cause and result be understood. Kumbhaka is the beginning, and the open channel and the success follow from it.

A night-shift nurse sits in the break room at three in the morning. She lets her breath slow, and her shoulders drop. That much is familiar. Slow, unhurried breathing is widely taught to settle a racing body, and a family doctor would say so without fuss. The rest of the chain is the tradition's claim. Medicine has no kundalini, no sushumna and no nadis. Nothing in anatomy matches a coiled power at the base of the spine or a central channel that becomes unblocked. Where practitioners report heat, tingling, stillness or a sense of waking, these are real experiences, but the old explanation for them cannot be confirmed from the body. Breath holding is a separate matter. A short, gentle pause is not the same as the long hold the text praises. Forced or prolonged holds can cause light-headedness, fainting, or a rise in blood pressure, and people with heart, lung or blood-pressure problems, or who are pregnant, should take advice before holding at all. If dizziness comes, the breath should return to normal. Today's understanding offers no support for the promise that a hold leads to rank in raja yoga.
