Two Kinds of Nadi Cleansing

Gheranda Samhita 5.36

नाडीशुद्धिर्द्विधा पोक्ता समनुर्निर्मनस्तथा। बीजेन समनुं कुर्यान्निर्मनुं धौतकर्मणा ॥

Meaning · English

Cleansing of the nadis, the channels of the breath, is taught as twofold: samanu, done with a seed-syllable, and nirmanu, done without one. The seed-syllable brings about the samanu. The cleansing act called dhauta brings about the nirmanu.

Start with the words. Nadi means a channel, a conduit through which the tradition says prana, the life-breath, moves. Shuddhi means making clean. Nadi-shuddhi, then, is cleansing of the channels, and in the breath chapters it is the step before any serious breath practice. Gheranda opens by saying it comes in two kinds. The first is samanu. The word carries manu, which here points to a mantra. Samanu is the cleansing done with a mantra. The tool is the bija, a seed-syllable, a short sound the practitioner holds in mind while working with the breath. The verse says the seed makes the samanu. It does not name the seed or give the method, so nothing about either can be taken from it. The second is nirmanu, the cleansing without a mantra. The verse says dhauta-karma accomplishes it. Dhauta means washing, and karma means an action. It is one of the cleansing acts of the body that Gheranda treats elsewhere. Why teach it this way? The verse gives no reason of its own. It sorts the matter so the listener knows there are two roads to one aim: a gentle one that works through breath and a sounded word, and a bodily one that works through washing. What it asks of a practitioner is first to understand which road is being described. The details come in the verses that follow.

The verse gives a classification, not a method, so this card says what can honestly be said about how the first road works and leaves the rest to the teacher. On the samanu side, the work is breath joined to a held syllable. In the body, slow breathing through the nose lets the ribs widen and the diaphragm move, and the exhale lengthens. Many people find the shoulders and jaw loosen as this happens. In the mind, a syllable held in attention gives it one thing to rest on, so it wanders less. That is the plain account of why a seed and a breath are paired. The tradition's own account is different. It says the nadis are blocked by impurity and that the practice clears them so prana can move evenly. That is the tradition's account, not physiology, and no instrument has found channels of this kind. The nirmanu side is bodily washing, the dhauta acts. They are learnt in person from a teacher, never from a page, and the text is not followed literally here, because some of these acts can injure someone who does them unguided. If the breath is tried at all, it is done without strain and without holding the breath. A beginner simply breathes quietly.

This verse names no benefit. It only sorts the cleansing into two kinds. The tradition's wider claim is that cleansing of the nadis prepares the practitioner for the breath practices that come after, and the Hatha manuals treat it as the ground for steadier breath work. Beyond that, a claim should wait for the verses that actually give one.

A mother rocks her baby at three in the morning, humming one low note on each slow out-breath. Her shoulders drop, and so does the baby's restlessness. That small scene is close to what the samanu side asks: slow breath, one sound, one thing for the mind to hold. Today's mainstream understanding agrees with part of this. Slow, even breathing through the nose and a repeated word or sound are generally accepted as calming and as a help to attention. A family doctor would say so in those general terms. The nadis have no modern match. Nothing in anatomy corresponds to channels that are blocked and cleared, and the idea of cleansing them is the tradition's account only. The idea that a seed-syllable has special effect beyond giving attention a focus has no support either. The dhauta acts are bodily cleansings. Medicine has no grounds to recommend them, and some, done without guidance, can cause harm. Where the old text is read as a literal instruction, it should not be followed that way.

This is not medical advice. A teacher corrects what a page cannot, and that matters most here. Stop at any dizziness, strain, pain or breathlessness, and do not hold the breath as a beginner. Anyone with asthma, heart or blood-pressure concerns, or who is pregnant, or recovering from surgery, should speak to their doctor first and keep breathing gentle. The dhauta cleansings are never to be learnt from reading. Do not attempt them without a qualified teacher beside you.
