Outer to the Seedless
Yoga Sutras 3.8
Meaning · English
Even these three, deep as they are, are outer limbs when set beside the seedless state, the contemplation that leaves no seed behind.
Take three words. Tad api means "even that": even the threefold practice just named. Bahiranga joins bahir, outside, with anga, limb. It means an outer limb, a part that serves the goal without being the goal. Nirbija joins nir, without, with bija, seed. A seed is what sprouts again. Nirbija is the contemplation in which nothing is left that could sprout. So the sense of the whole sutra is this: attention, meditation and contemplation count as outer limbs when measured against the seedless state. Patanjali has just called them inner, in comparison with posture, breath and the earlier means. Now he measures them against something further, and the same practice ranks as outer. Why say it? A student who reaches the three could take them as the end of the road. Patanjali blocks that by showing a stage past them. Everything so far has been about stilling the mind's turnings, and the seedless state is where even the impressions that would start new turnings are held still. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes the three as the means to contemplation that still rests on an object, and he calls the seedless state beyond them. The later commentators follow him in ranking the three below it.
A house with a gate, a porch, a hallway and a back room. Walking from the street, the hallway feels deep inside. Yet someone standing in the back room would call the hallway the way in. The three practices are the hallway: inner next to the street, outer next to the room at the back.
1. Choose one small task today, such as drinking a cup of tea or washing a dish. Give it five minutes of undivided attention. 2. Notice the moment your attention rests on it without effort, and the moment a thought about how well you are doing arrives. 3. Afterwards, notice that the practice, the doing-well thought and the one who watches are all still there. Simply note that they are there, and attempt nothing further.
