Nearer the Inside

Yoga Sutras 3.7

Meaning · English

These three together are more inward than the practices that came before them.

Three words carry the sutra. Traya means a set of three. Here it points back to the three named just before: dharana, fixing attention on one place; dhyana, attention staying unbroken on it; and samadhi, attention taking on the shape of what it rests on. Antaranga joins antar, inside, with anga, limb: an inner limb. Purvebhyah means than the earlier ones. Those are the first five limbs of yoga: conduct toward others, personal discipline, posture, breath, and drawing the senses in. Read whole, the sutra says the three belong closer to the inside than the five. The five work on conduct, body, breath and senses. The three work on the mind itself. Patanjali says this because the practitioner needs to know where these three stand in the path. Everything before shaped the ground. These three are the first limbs to act directly on the mind. Vyasa's commentary takes them as the inner means, with the earlier five as preparation for them. The commentators add that inner here is relative. It is inner compared with the five, as the next sutra goes on to say.

Picture walking into a large house. First the gate, then the yard, then the front step, then the hallway, and last the closed room at the back. Each place is nearer the middle than the one before. The first five limbs are the approach. The three are the rooms inside.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes. Notice how the outer things settle first: the body's posture, then the breath, then the sounds around you. 2. Choose one plain object, such as a candle flame or your breathing at the nostrils, and rest your attention there for two minutes. 3. Notice the difference between getting the body ready and the mind actually staying. Simply notice it, without judging.
