Applied Stage by Stage

Yoga Sutras 3.6

तस्य भूमिषु विनियोगः

Meaning · English

Its application is by stages. It is put to use on one level, and only then on the next.

Three words carry the sutra. Tasya means "of that", and it points back to samyama, the three practices held on one object. Bhumi means ground, a floor or level, the place where a foot rests. Here it is plural and in the locative: on the levels. Viniyoga is made from a prefix that adds the sense of "down upon" and the root yuj, to yoke. It means putting something to work, applying it. Taken whole, Patanjali says that samyama is not used all at once on everything. It is applied on one level, then on the next, in order. He says it because the sutras just before name samyama and promise illumination from mastering it. A student then asks where to turn it, and in what order. The answer is that it works through grounds, each one standing on the one beneath. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way: samyama is applied to the next level only after the earlier one is conquered, and a person who skips a level does not succeed by leaping. He adds that yoga itself shows the practitioner the next ground. The later commentators keep to this reading.

Someone crossing a stream on stepping stones puts a foot on one stone and tests it before reaching for the next. A stone not yet trusted is not stepped past. Samyama is applied the same way: each level is made firm before the next is touched.

1. Choose one plain object today, such as a cup or a leaf, and sit with it for five minutes, letting your attention rest on it alone. 2. Notice when the attention stays and when it slips away. Do not hurry to anything harder. 3. Repeat with the same object tomorrow. Move to a different one only when this one feels settled, and notice what that settling is like.
