Light After Mastery
Yoga Sutras 3.5
Meaning · English
From mastery of samyama comes the light of prajna, the clear seeing of insight.
Three words carry the sutra. Samyama is the three inner practices held together on one object, as the previous sutra names it. Jaya means mastery, a winning or a firm hold. Prajna is insight, from pra (fully) and jna (knowing). Aloka is light, a becoming visible. So the sutra reads: tat (that) jaya (mastery), prajna aloka (the light of insight). Patanjali says that when samyama is mastered, and not merely tried, insight shines. The mind sees its object plainly, as a room is seen once a lamp is lit. He says this because the sutras before describe how to gather the mind, and a reader asks what the gathering is for. This is the answer: clear knowing. It rests on the earlier sutra, where samyama is defined. Vyasa's Bhashya takes it that as samyama grows steady, insight grows steady with it, and it becomes clearer and more settled stage by stage. The later commentators generally agree, and add that this insight is what the practitioner then applies to the objects that follow in this chapter.
A lantern carried into a dark shed shows nothing while the flame is guttering. Once the flame stops flickering, every shelf and tool stands clear. Samyama is the steady flame, and prajna is the shed made visible.
1. Choose one ordinary object today, such as a cup or a leaf, and look at it for two minutes, bringing your attention back each time it wanders. 2. Afterward, notice what you saw that you had not seen before: a mark, a colour, a shape. 3. Repeat this for a few days and notice whether looking steadily changes how much you see. Treat it as noticing only, not as a skill to prove.
