Meaning · English

What state is called Bhairava's, whose form is filled and lacks nothing? By which means does one come to its mouth, its entrance? Tell me, Bhairava, so that I may know it rightly, exactly as it is.

Three words carry the question. Bhairava is the name of the one she asks, and also of the state itself. Bharita comes from a root meaning to fill or to bear, so the state has a form that is full, with nothing missing in it. Mukha is mouth or face, and here it means an entrance, a place you go in by. Upaya is a means, literally a way of drawing near. Now the clauses, one by one. She asks what the state is that is called his, the one whose shape is fullness. She asks by which means its entrance can be reached. Then she asks him to say it so that she knows it rightly, completely, just as it is. Nothing is left to guess. She wants the real thing named, and the way in named with it. This works as a doorway because she asks for an entrance, not a description. The reply in the following verses puts the answer in breath, rising and settling, a movement already going on in every ordinary moment. The door is that moment, opened from inside.

Someone has told you a well is deep and the water is sweet. You do not ask for more praise of the water. You ask where the rope hangs and which way the bucket goes down. Her question is the question about the rope: not what the fullness is like, but where you take hold.
