Who Worships Whom
Vijnana Bhairava 16
Meaning · English
That form is to be known as it truly is: spotless, filling the whole world. In a reality this high, who is there to worship, and who is left to be satisfied?
Three words carry the verse. Tattva is the "that-ness" of a thing, what it is rather than what it is called. Vimala is "without mala", without stain, so nothing can smudge it. Puraṇa comes from a root for filling, and with viśva, the whole world, it says there is no corner where this form is missing. Now the clauses in order. The form is to be known as it actually is, not pictured or imagined. It is spotless. It fills everything. It is the highest reality, with nothing above it. Then comes the closing pair of questions: who is worshipped, and who is satisfied? Worship needs a giver standing apart from a receiver. Satisfaction needs a lack that gets filled. If this reality already fills the whole world, nobody stands outside it to make an offering, and nothing is missing for anyone to be satisfied about. By the text's own logic, this is why the ordinary moment works as the doorway. The one asking how to reach it is already standing inside what is being asked about, so the moment only has to be opened from within.
A man stands in a lake up to his chest, holding a cup and looking for somewhere to pour it as an offering. Every direction he turns is already lake. The cup, the pouring and the hunt for a place all assume an outside that is not there. The verse's two questions work the same way.
