The Fall of Kichaka

Mahabharata, Virata Parva 22

The story · English

Bhima told Draupadi that he would slay Kichaka and all his friends. He instructed her to arrange a meeting with Kichaka for the following evening. He pointed to the dancing-hall built by the King of Matsya, where girls dance by day but leave at night. Bhima said he would wait there to make Kichaka see the spirits of his deceased ancestors. He warned Draupadi to be careful so that others would not see her speaking with him. After their conversation, both of them shed tears of grief and waited with painful impatience for the night to pass and the dawn to come.

The next morning, Kichaka went to the palace and accosted Draupadi. He reminded her that he had kicked her in the court and that King Virata was a king in name only, as Kichaka commanded the forces of the realm. He told her to accept him cheerfully, promising to become her slave. He offered her a hundred nishkas, hundreds of servants, and cars yoked with mules if she would unite with him. Draupadi replied that she would yield to him only if he promised that neither his friends nor his brothers would know of their union, as she feared detection by the Gandharvas.

Kichaka agreed to her terms, claiming he was blinded by love and would repair to her abode alone so the sun-like Gandharvas would remain unaware. Draupadi told him to meet her at night in the dancing-hall, as the Gandharvas did not know that place and they would escape censure. As the day passed, the time felt like a month to Draupadi. Kichaka, unaware that Death had taken the form of Sairindhri, felt great delight. He spent his time embellishing himself with unguents and ornaments, his beauty heightening like the wick of a lamp just before it expires.

Draupadi approached Bhima in the kitchen and told him that Kichaka would come alone to the empty dancing-hall at night. She urged Bhima to take the life of the vain son of a Suta, who slighted the Gandharvas. She asked him to lift Kichaka from the earth as Krishna had lifted the Naga Kaliya from the Yamuna, and to protect the honor of their race. Bhima told her that her news was the only aid he needed. He swore by truth, his brothers, and morality that he would crush Kichaka as the lord of the celestials slew Vritra.

Bhima declared that whether secretly or openly, he would slay Kichaka, and if the Matsyas fought for him, he would slay them too. Draupadi asked him to kill Kichaka in secret so that he would not have to renounce his pledge. Bhima assured her he would crush the head of the wicked man like an elephant crushes a vela fruit. That night, Bhima went to the dancing-hall and disguised himself, waiting in the gloom like a lion lying in wait for a deer. Kichaka entered the chamber, hopeful of meeting Panchali, and approached the figure lying on the bed.

Kichaka, filled with ecstasy, spoke to the figure, boasting of the wealth, mansions, and maid servants he had set apart for her. He mentioned how other women praised his beauty and dress. Bhima replied with irony, telling Kichaka that it was well he was handsome and skilled in the art of love-making. Then, the mighty-armed Bhima suddenly rose and laughed, telling the wretch that his sister would soon behold him dragged to the ground like an elephant dragged by a lion. Bhima seized Kichaka by the hair, and a fierce hand-to-hand encounter began between the two men.

The fight was like two powerful elephants or the ancient battle between Vali and Sugriva. They used their nails and teeth, locked in embraces and dragging each other like furious tigers. Kichaka threw Bhima down with violence; Bhima threw him down in turn and tossed him about like a hurricane tosses a tree. Weakening, Kichaka brought Bhima down with his knees, but Bhima rose quickly like Yama with a mace in hand. The edifice began to shake as they roared at each other. Eventually, Bhima overpowered the enfeebled Kichaka, seizing him by the hair and roaring like a hungry tiger. He bound Kichaka with his arms and whirled him around until the man roared like a broken trumpet.

Bhima squeezed Kichaka's throat, and when the man's limbs were broken into fragments and his eyelids closed, Bhima slew him with his knees to the waist. After Kichaka became motionless, Bhima rolled him on the ground, stating he was now freed from the debt he owed his brothers. In a rage, Bhima crushed Kichaka's arms, legs, neck, and head into his body, reducing him to a shapeless ball of flesh. He called Draupadi to see what had become of the lustful wretch and pressed the body with his feet. He told her that any man who solicited her would be slain in this manner.

After Bhima returned to the kitchen, Draupadi told the guards to come and behold Kichaka, slain by her Gandharva husbands. The guards arrived with torches and were struck with amazement at the mangled body, concluding a Gandharva had killed him. Kichaka's relatives arrived and wailed, frightened by the sight of the body. They demanded that Draupadi be slain or cremated with Kichaka. King Virata, knowing the prowess of the Sutas, gave his assent. The Kichakas seized the frightened Draupadi, bound her, and began carrying her toward the cemetery.

Draupadi wailed for her husbands, calling out to Jaya, Jayanta, Vijaya, Jayatsena, and Jayatvala. Hearing her, Bhima rushed to the cemetery. He uprooted a massive tree and carried it on his shoulders, charging at the Sutas. Terrified by the sight of the enraged Gandharva, the Sutas set Draupadi free and fled toward the city. Using the tree, Bhima slew one hundred and five of them. He comforted the weeping Draupadi and told her to return to the city while he returned to the kitchen by another route. The hundred and six dead Sutas left the onlookers in astonishment.
