Arjuna Returns as Vrihannala

Mahabharata, Virata Parva 66

The story · English

After defeating the Kurus in battle, Arjuna brought back the vast herds of cattle stolen from King Virata. As the defeated Kuru soldiers retreated through the deep forest, many emerged before Arjuna with slow steps, their hearts filled with fear. They stood before him with joined palms and dishevelled hair, exhausted by hunger and thirst in a foreign land. Overcome by terror and confusion, they bowed down to the son of Pritha and declared that they were his slaves. Arjuna welcomed them and told them to go in peace, assuring them that he would not take the lives of those who were afflicted and that they had his protection.

Hearing these words, the warriors blessed Arjuna, praising his fame and wishing him a long life. The Kauravas were unable to face him as he proceeded toward the city of Virata, moving like an elephant with rent temples. Having scattered the Kuru army like a violent wind scattering clouds, Arjuna spoke to the prince Uttara. He told the prince that only he knew the sons of Pritha were living with his father. Arjuna advised Uttara not to praise the Pandavas upon entering the city, lest King Virata hide in fear. Instead, Arjuna told him to claim the victory as his own, stating he had vanquished the Kurus and recovered the cattle.

Uttara replied that the feat Arjuna had achieved was beyond his own power and ability. However, he promised that he would not reveal Arjuna's identity to his father unless Arjuna told him to do so. After securing the cattle wealth, Arjuna returned to the cemetery and approached the Sami tree, his body mangled by the arrows of the enemy. At that moment, the illusion created by Viswakarma melted away. The fiery monkey on the flag-staff vanished, and Uttara's own banner bearing the device of a lion was restored to the chariot. Uttara put the arrows and quivers of the Pandava princes, and the Gandiva too, back in the Sami tree.

With a glad heart, Uttara set out for the city with Arjuna serving as his charioteer. Having slain the foe, Arjuna bound his hair into a braid as he had before and took the reins from Uttara's hands. He returned to his disguise as Vrihannala, the car-driver. As the routed Kauravas retreated in a dejected mood toward Hastinapura, Arjuna suggested to Uttara that they should not enter the city immediately. He proposed that they wait until the afternoon, after the steeds had been bathed and given drink, and that the cowherds should be sent ahead to the city to proclaim the news of victory.

Uttara followed Arjuna's advice and ordered messengers to proclaim that the king's victory had been won and the cattle recovered. The Matsya and Bharata princes returned to the Sami tree to retrieve the ornaments and robes they had left there. Once they were dressed and their chariot restored, the heroic son of Virata returned to the city with Vrihannala as his driver. King Virata, having recovered his wealth from the Trigartas, entered his city with a cheerful heart, accompanied by the four Pandavas. He looked resplendent as he sat upon his throne, where he was worshipped by his subjects and the Brahmanas.

After saluting his subjects, King Virata asked where his son Uttara had gone. The women and maidens of the palace joyfully informed him that Uttara, incensed by the theft of the cattle, had gone out alone with only Vrihannala as his second. They told the king that Uttara had gone to vanquish the six mighty car-warriors: Bhishma, Kripa, Karna, Duryodhana, Drona, and Drona's son. Hearing that his son had faced such a formidable army with only one chariot and a driver of neuter sex, Virata became filled with grief.

King Virata addressed his chief counsellors, ordering those warriors who were not wounded by the Trigartas to lead a mighty force of horses, elephants, and foot-soldiers to protect Uttara. He insisted they find out immediately whether the prince was still alive, for he believed that one who had a person of neuter sex as his driver could not be alive. Yudhishthira smiled at the afflicted king and told him that if Vrihannala had been the charioteer, the foe would never have taken the cattle. He assured Virata that protected by such a driver, his son could vanquish not only the Kurus, but even the gods, Asuras, Siddhas, and Yakshas together. Shortly after, messengers arrived to confirm the victory and the safe return of Uttara.

Filled with joy, King Virata ordered the highways to be decorated with flags and the gods to be worshipped with flowers. He commanded that musicians, harlots, and brave warriors march out to receive his son, and that a bellman on an intoxicated elephant proclaim the victory. As the citizens gathered with cymbals and trumpets to welcome the prince, Virata turned to the Pandavas. He asked Sairindhri to fetch the dice and told Kanka to begin a game. Kanka warned him that gambling is fraught with evils and cited how Yudhishthira had lost his kingdom and brothers at dice, but he agreed to play if the king insisted.

During the game, Virata boasted that his son had vanquished the formidable Kauravas. Yudhishthira replied that it was natural for him to conquer when he had Vrihannala as his charioteer. This infuriated King Virata, who called him a wretch of a Brahmana for comparing a person of neuter sex to his son. He warned Yudhishthira that he only pardoned the offence for the sake of friendship and commanded him not to speak that way again. Yudhishthira persisted, arguing that where Bhishma, Drona and the other mighty car-warriors were gathered, or where Indra himself stood surrounded by the Maruts, none but Vrihannala could fight them all, and that with such an ally, victory was certain.

Enraged by the repeated comments, King Virata struck Yudhishthira in the face with a die. Blood began to flow from Yudhishthira's nose, which he held in his hands. He glanced at Draupadi, who, understanding his meaning, brought a golden vessel filled with water to receive the blood. Meanwhile, Uttara entered the city and, reaching the palace gate, sent word of his arrival to his father. When the porter informed the king that Uttara waited at the gate with Vrihannala, Virata happily ordered both brought in. However, Yudhishthira whispered to the warder that Uttara must enter alone. He warned that if Vrihannala saw him bleeding, he would slay Virata and his entire court in a rage.
