The Enemy Called Desire

Bhagavad Gita 3.43

Meaning · English

Knowing the soul to be higher than the intellect, steady the lower self by the higher self. Then kill the enemy, mighty-armed one, who wears the form of desire and is so hard to approach.

Three words carry this. Buddhi is the intellect, the part that weighs and decides. Atman is used twice, with two senses: the lower self of senses, mind and intellect, and the higher self, the soul. Kama is desire, the wanting that pulls at all of them. The plain sense is this. Krishna has just told Arjuna that the soul stands above even the intellect. Now he draws the conclusion: once Arjuna knows that, he can use it. The higher self steadies the lower one, the way a firm hand steadies a shaking cup. Then the enemy can be struck. Krishna calls it formidable because desire hides in the very faculties Arjuna would use to fight it. It argues in the intellect's own voice. The problem it answers is that the senses, mind and intellect cannot restrain themselves, since they are what desire works through. Krishna asks Arjuna to stop depending on them alone and to stand on what is above them. Shankara reads the enemy as desire, to be ended by knowledge of the Self. Ramanuja reads it as the discipline of someone who sees the soul as distinct from the body and its pulls. Madhva stresses knowing the Lord as higher than everything, with that knowledge as the strength for the fight.

Someone whose hand trembles badly, from cold or nerves, grips that wrist with the other hand until the shaking settles, then threads the needle. The steadying hand is the higher self. The shaking hand is the lower self, with its senses, mind and intellect.

1. Today, pick one small craving, such as a snack, a scroll through your phone, or a sharp reply you want to make. 2. When it rises, stop for two minutes. Do not fight it or feed it. Just say quietly, "This is wanting." 3. Notice who is watching the wanting. That watcher is steadier than the want. 4. Then choose what to do. Write down how it went in one line tonight.

A woman stands at a petrol-station counter. She gave up cigarettes three weeks ago, and now the packet sits behind the cashier's shoulder. Her mind is already building the case: one won't matter, it has been a long week. The verse would change this moment in steps. First, she would see that the case-building is the wanting itself, speaking in her own reasonable voice. Second, she would step back from it and become the one who sees the argument, not the one who is carried along by it. Third, she would choose, with the wanting still in the room. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: an urge that is noticed and not obeyed often rises, peaks and fades. The verse does not promise that the craving will vanish, that she will never slip, or that willpower alone is enough. Where a habit is hard to break, a doctor or a support group is part of steadying oneself, and the verse does not ask her to go without them.
