What Stands Above the Intellect
Bhagavad Gita 3.42
Meaning · English
The senses, they say, are superior. Superior to the senses is the mind. Superior to the mind is the intellect. And more superior even than the intellect is that soul.
Three words carry it. Indriya means the senses, the faculties that reach outward to sound, sight, taste and touch. Manas means the mind, which receives what the senses report and swirls with wanting and doubt. Buddhi means the intellect, the part that sorts and decides. Krishna sets them in a ladder: the senses, then the mind above them, then the intellect above the mind, and above the intellect the soul, named only as "that". The reason comes from the verses before it. Krishna has just said that desire settles in the senses, mind and intellect and clouds knowledge of the soul. Arjuna needs a map of that territory. A higher rung can steady a lower one, and the soul is the one rung that desire does not reach. The verse asks Arjuna to know the order, so that he stops treating a craving as the master of the house. Shankara reads "that" as the Self, the witness beyond all inner instruments. Ramanuja reads it as the individual soul, distinct from and higher than the intellect. Madhva reads it as pointing to the Supreme, who stands above all of them.
A busy restaurant at night. Waiters carry in orders, the cook is flustered by every shout, and the manager weighs what can be made in time. Above them all stands the owner, who watches without being rushed. Senses, mind and intellect are the staff, and the owner is the soul.
1. Tonight, when you feel a pull toward something small, such as a snack or your phone, stop for ten seconds and name the pull: "a sense is calling." 2. Then ask which rung is speaking: the eye or tongue, the restless mind, or the intellect with a reason. 3. Notice that you are the one watching all three. Keep that watcher in view for a few breaths. 4. Then choose, and note whether the choice felt different.
A man stands in his kitchen at midnight. A message from a rival has just lit up his phone, and his thumb is already moving to reply. The eyes have read the words. The mind has turned them into heat. The intellect is somewhere behind, tired, offering a weak case for waiting. The verse would slow this by naming the order. The reading is a sense act. The anger is the mind's. A decision is the intellect's work. And Krishna tells Arjuna that one more thing stands beyond all three, the soul that is not itself angry. Seeing the layers, he puts the phone face down, lets the heat pass, and answers in the morning or not at all. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: when we are tired, the higher faculties lose their grip on the lower ones first. The verse does not promise the anger will not come, or that the rival is wrong. It does not settle the quarrel. It only says there is a place to stand from which the quarrel can be seen.
