Bhagavad Gita 4.1
Meaning · English
The Supreme Lord Shree Krishna said: I taught this eternal science of Yog to Vivasvan, the Sun-god. Vivasvan told it to Manu, the first father of humankind, and Manu instructed Ikshvaku, first king of the Solar dynasty.
Three words carry the verse. Yog comes from a root meaning to join or yoke: the science of joining the self to the Divine, and the discipline that leads there. Avyaya means what does not spend itself or wear away: a = not, vyaya = loss. Proktavan is spoken forth: Krishna did not hint at this teaching, he stated it. Krishna tells Arjuna that he gave this science first to Vivasvan, the Sun-god. Vivasvan gave it to Manu, the first father of humankind, and Manu gave it to Ikshvaku, the first king of the Solar dynasty. The line runs from heaven to the first human, then to the first ruler. So what Arjuna is about to hear is not a new idea made up on a battlefield. Krishna also calls the teaching undiminished: passing through three hands has not worn it down. Shankara reads this as the Gita's path of knowledge joined with action, given first so that rulers could protect the world. Ramanuja takes the speaker as the Supreme Person himself and the teaching as the way to know the self. Madhva stresses that the teacher is the Lord, which is why the teaching holds. The verse asks Arjuna to receive, not to invent.
A lit candle touches the wick of a second candle, and that one lights a third. The first flame is no smaller for having given light. The teaching is the flame: each receiver carries it whole, and the line of hands from Sun-god to Manu to Ikshvaku is the row of candles.
1. Tonight, think of one skill or saying you rely on, such as a recipe, a way of handling money, or a prayer. Name the person who gave it to you. 2. Ask yourself who gave it to them, and follow the chain back as far as you know it. Spend about five minutes. 3. This week, teach that one thing to someone younger or newer, aloud and in full, without trimming it to look clever. 4. Notice whether you feel like its owner or its carrier.
A retired bus mechanic stands in the depot on his last afternoon, with a young apprentice beside him and an engine running rough. He has a habit of resting his palm on the casing to feel what the sound cannot tell him. The verse changes the moment in steps. First, he sees that his habit came to him from an older man, who had it from someone before. Second, he stops treating it as private property that leaves with him. Third, he hands it over plainly: he puts the apprentice's hand on the casing and says what to feel for. Fourth, the apprentice receives it as something already tested by many hands, not as one man's opinion. Ordinary experience confirms that skills of the hand and ear survive only when someone shows them to someone else. The verse does not promise that the apprentice will master it, that the knowledge will never be lost, or that the old man's leaving will hurt less.
