हरिदश्वस्सहस्रार्चिस्सप्तसप्तिर्मरीचिमान् । तिमिरोन्मथनश्शम्भुस्त्वष्टा मार्तण्ड अंशुमान्

Meaning · English

Green-horsed, thousand-flamed, drawn by seven steeds, full of rays; churner of darkness, bringer of good, the shaper, born of the egg, the bright-rayed one.

Nine names for the sun, each a different look at the same light. Green horses and seven steeds picture his chariot crossing the sky. Thousand-flamed, full of rays and bright-rayed say how far he shines. Churner of darkness: he does not wait for night to leave, he breaks it up. Bringer of good is what his rising means for living things. The shaper gives things their outline. Born of the egg names his birth, an old story the hymn only touches. Each name adds one more thing seen.

Morning light comes through a kitchen window. On the counter it is a warm patch. On a glass it is a sharp glint. Across the floor it is a long bright stripe. In the steam from the kettle it stands as a column. It is one light taking many shapes. The names work like that, each one catching the sun where it lands.

हरे घोड़ों वाला, सहस्र ज्वालाओं वाला, सात घोड़ों से खिंचने वाला, किरणों से भरा; अंधकार को मथने वाला, कल्याण लाने वाला, गढ़ने वाला, अंडे से जन्मा, उज्ज्वल किरणों वाला।

सूर्य के नौ नाम, हर एक उसी प्रकाश को देखने की अलग दृष्टि। हरे घोड़े और सात घोड़े आकाश पार करते उसके रथ का चित्र खींचते हैं। सहस्र ज्वालाओं वाला, किरणों से भरा और उज्ज्वल किरणों वाला बताते हैं कि वह कितनी दूर तक चमकता है। अंधकार को मथने वाला: वह रात के जाने की प्रतीक्षा नहीं करता, उसे तोड़ डालता है। कल्याण लाने वाला बताता है कि उसके उदय का जीवों के लिए क्या अर्थ है। गढ़ने वाला वस्तुओं को उनका आकार देता है। अंडे से जन्मा उसके जन्म का नाम है, एक पुरानी कथा जिसे स्तोत्र बस छूकर निकल जाता है। हर नाम देखी हुई एक और बात जोड़ता है।

सुबह की धूप रसोई की खिड़की से भीतर आती है। स्लैब पर वह एक गुनगुना टुकड़ा है। गिलास पर वह एक तीखी चमक है। फ़र्श पर वह एक लंबी उजली पट्टी है। केतली की भाप में वह एक स्तंभ-सी खड़ी है। एक ही प्रकाश अनेक रूप ले रहा है। नाम भी ऐसे ही काम करते हैं, हर एक सूर्य को वहीं पकड़ता है जहाँ वह पड़ता है।
