Golden Seed, Day-Maker

Aditya Hridayam 10

Meaning · English

Son of Aditi, the one who stirs all to life, the Sun, the sky-traveler, the nourisher, rich in rays; gold-like, shining, of golden seed, maker of the day.

Every name here belongs to the sun itself, and each catches a different side of it. It is Aditi's son. It is the one who sets things moving. It is Sūrya, the traveler across the sky, the one who feeds what grows, the one full of rays. Then the names turn to colour and warmth: like gold, shining, of golden seed. The last name is the plainest. It is the one who makes the day.

Think of a woman who is called Mum in her kitchen, Doctor at the clinic, and Aunty by the children next door. The name changes with whoever is looking at her, but she stays one person. Each name for the sun works the same way. It catches the sun in one role: born, moving, feeding, glowing, bringing the day.
