Ancestors, Wind and Breath

Aditya Hridayam 9

Meaning · English

He is the ancestors, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the twin Ashvins, the Maruts and Manu; wind, fire, all creatures, the breaths of life; maker of seasons, bringer of light.

The sun is named as many things at once. He is the ancestors, the family dead who are still remembered. He is the Vasus, the Sadhyas and the Maruts, whole companies of gods, the Maruts being the storm-winds. He is the twin Ashvins, the healers, and Manu, first father of people. Then the list comes down to earth: wind, fire, living creatures, and the breath moving in and out of them. He sets the seasons turning, and he makes the light.

Walk through a house at night: a fan turning, a fridge humming, a lamp on the desk, a kettle starting to boil. Each does a different job and has its own name, but cut the main line and all of them stop. The hymn names ancestors, winds and every breath the same way, as things running on one current.
