Meaning · English

He is Brahma and Vishnu, Shiva and Skanda, Prajapati; great Indra, the giver of wealth, Time, Yama, Soma the moon, and the lord of the waters.

"He" is the sun Rama has just been told to honor. Then the names come one after another. Brahma, who makes the world. Vishnu, who keeps it. Shiva, Skanda the young commander of the gods' army, and Prajapati, lord of all creatures. Great Indra, king of the gods. The giver of wealth. Time itself. Yama, who rules the dead. Soma, the moon. The lord of the waters. Each name is a different work, making, guarding, ruling, giving, ending, and every one is said to be this same sun.

A woman at a school gate is "Mum" to one child. At the hospital an hour later she is "Doctor." On Saturday the football team calls her "Coach." Three names, three jobs, one person walking between them. The verse lists gods the same way: each name marks a task, and the sun answers to all of them.
