व्योमनाथस्तमोभेदी ऋग्यजुस्सामपारगः । घनवृष्टिरपांमित्रो विन्ध्यवीथीप्लवङ्गमः

Meaning · English

Lord of the sky, piercer of the dark, master of the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas; bringer of heavy rain, friend of the waters, swift along the Vindhya road.

Six names for the sun, and they reach beyond light alone. He rules the open sky and breaks through the dark. He has gone to the far shore of the three oldest Vedas, the Rig of praise, the Yajur of rite and the Sama of song, knowing them end to end. So sacred learning belongs to him as much as daylight does. He brings the heavy rains and is a friend to every water. And he moves quickly across the Vindhya hills, the range his daily path was pictured crossing.

Picture a pot of water simmering with a lid on it. Steam rises, gathers on the underside of the lid, and drips back down into the pot. The sun does the same with the sea, only the lid is the whole sky. It lifts the water up and gives it back as rain, which is why it is called the waters' friend.
