Red Disc, Death, Seer

Aditya Hridayam 14

Meaning · English

He who blazes, the round disc, death itself, tawny, scorching all; the seer, the whole, of great radiance, red, the one from whom every being arises.

The names here pull against each other. The sun blazes and scorches everything, and it is also named death, the one who brings things to their end. Yet the same line closes by calling it the source from which every being comes. Between those ends sit plain descriptions of what the eye sees: a round disc, tawny, red, very bright. And two larger names: the seer, the wise one who sees clearly, and the whole, meaning everything there is.

A stove flame under a pot of rice. Left alone too long, the same flame burns the pot black. Watched, it is the reason there is dinner at all. Nobody thinks of these as two fires. The sun named death and the sun named source of every being are one blaze, seen from two sides.
