Twelve Selves, Brightest Light
Aditya Hridayam 15
Meaning · English
Master of the constellations, the planets and the stars, you who bring the world into being, brightest even among the bright ones, you of twelve forms, salutation to you.
The sun is named master of three kinds of lights in the night sky: the constellations, the planets and the scattered stars. All of them answer to him. He is also the one who brings the world into being and keeps it going. Then comes a small turn. Many things shine, and among all of them his shining is the greatest. Twelve forms names one sun appearing in twelve ways, often read as the twelve months of the year. The line closes with a plain bow.
Walk out at dawn after a night of porch lights and streetlamps. The bulbs are still burning, but once the sun clears the rooftops you can barely tell which ones are on. Nothing switched them off. They were simply outshone. That is the claim about the stars and planets: they keep their light, and the sun's is greater.
