Eastern and Western Mountains
Aditya Hridayam 16
Meaning · English
Salutation to the eastern mountain, salutation to the western mountain. To the master of all the hosts of shining bodies, to the ruler of the day, salutation.
A bow to the eastern mountain, and a bow to the western one. Old Indian sky-lore pictured a mountain at each edge of the earth. The sun climbs out from behind one at dawn and goes down behind the other at dusk. Saluting those mountains as the sun treats its whole crossing, first light to last, as one presence. Then come two titles. He is master of the crowds of lights in the night sky, and ruler of the day. Night and day both answer to him.
On a city bus, the sign above the windscreen shows only two names: the first stop and the last. Riders read those two names and know the whole route, every street in between. Saluting the eastern and western mountains works the same way. Naming where the sun starts and where it stops holds the entire day's path.
