Victory and Its Blessing

Aditya Hridayam 17

Meaning · English

Salutation to victory, to victory's blessing, to the lord of tawny horses. Salutation, salutation to the thousand-rayed, to Aditi's son, again and again.

The sun is first called victory itself. Then it is called the good that victory carries: winning that is auspicious and right, not just winning. Next comes a picture of the sun's chariot, drawn by tawny horses. Then the thousand-rayed one, whose light goes out in every direction at once. Last comes Aditya, son of Aditi, mother of the gods. All through the line the bows are doubled, salutation, salutation. A person does that before someone they hold close.

Picture a solar lamp left on a windowsill all day. At night it glows on the table, but the glow was never its own. It was gathered from the sun. Calling the sun victory works the same way. Whatever strength a tired fighter brings to the field is counted as light drawn from that one source.
