नम उग्राय वीराय सारङ्गाय नमो नमः । नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय मार्ताण्डाय नमो नमः

Meaning · English

Salutation to the fierce one, the hero, the swift-moving one, again and again. Salutation to the one who wakes the lotus, to Martanda, again and again.

The sun is greeted from two sides at once. It is fierce, with a heat that can scorch, and it is a hero, strong enough to stand against anything. The word saranga has several senses; read as swift, it pictures the sun crossing the whole sky in a single day. Then the same power is praised for opening the lotus, a flower that stays shut through the night and unfolds only when the sun reaches it. Martanda is an old name of the sun, usually explained as the one born from an egg thought lifeless. The hymn does not split the sun into two. One sun is praised for both its force and its care.

A stove flame that can scorch a pan black is the same flame that gently warms a cup of milk at night. Nobody keeps two fires for the two jobs. The sun's fierceness and its care for the lotus work the same way: one heat, felt differently depending on what it meets.

उग्र को, वीर को, तीव्र गति से चलने वाले को बार-बार नमस्कार। कमल को जगाने वाले को, मार्तण्ड को बार-बार नमस्कार।

सूर्य को एक साथ दो ओर से नमन किया जाता है। वह उग्र है, उसकी तपन झुलसा सकती है, और वह वीर है, इतना बलवान कि किसी के भी सामने डटा रह सके। सारङ्ग शब्द के कई अर्थ हैं; इसे तीव्र के अर्थ में लें तो यह सूर्य का एक ही दिन में पूरा आकाश पार करना दिखाता है। फिर उसी शक्ति की स्तुति कमल को खिलाने के लिए होती है, जो फूल रात भर बंद रहता है और तभी खिलता है जब सूर्य उस तक पहुँचता है। मार्तण्ड सूर्य का एक पुराना नाम है, जिसका अर्थ प्रायः यह बताया जाता है कि वह उस अंडे से जन्मा जिसे निर्जीव समझा गया था। स्तोत्र सूर्य को दो में नहीं बाँटता। एक ही सूर्य की स्तुति उसके बल और उसके स्नेह, दोनों के लिए होती है।

चूल्हे की जो लौ तवे को झुलसाकर काला कर सकती है, वही लौ रात में दूध के प्याले को धीरे से गरम भी करती है। इन दो कामों के लिए कोई दो आग नहीं रखता। सूर्य की उग्रता और कमल के प्रति उसका स्नेह भी इसी तरह काम करते हैं: ताप एक ही है, बस वह जिससे मिलता है उसके अनुसार अलग अनुभव होता है।
