Master of Three, All-Consuming

Aditya Hridayam 19

Meaning · English

Salutation to the lord over Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, to the Sun with Aditya's radiance, to the blazing one who devours all, whose form carries Rudra's fierceness.

The Sun is named as master over the three great gods: Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu, the one who never falls. Then he is called plainly the Sun, carrying the splendour that belongs to Aditi's sons. He shines. He consumes everything; whatever exists is finally taken back into him. And his body has a fierce edge, the same wildness that belongs to Rudra, the storm god. The line holds both sides together: the one who stands above all the gods is also the one who eats all things.

A wood stove in winter: the same flame that warms the room and cooks the rice keeps eating log after log until only grey ash sits in the grate. Nobody thinks of the warmth and the hunger as two separate fires. The hymn holds the shining Sun and the all-devouring Sun in one name the same way.
