The Promise to Explain Dharma

Vaisheshika Sutras 1.1.1

Meaning · English

Now, and for this reason, we will explain dharma.

Every classical Indian treatise opens by naming its subject. Kanada names his in one line: dharma. Take the words one at a time. 'Now' marks a beginning. On the usual reading, the teaching starts here, after whatever preparation came before. 'For this reason' says the subject is taken up because there is a need for it, and the next sutra spells that need out. 'We will explain' promises an explanation, an account set out in order. Dharma usually means duty, law or right conduct. That makes it a strange first word for a book about what the world is made of. No commentary is printed here, so the reasoning comes from what the school is well known to hold. Vaisheshika treats dharma as whatever leads both to well-being in this life and to final freedom. It also holds that clear knowledge of the kinds of reality feeds that freedom. Those kinds are substance, quality, action and the rest. So a catalogue of the world opens by naming dharma, because the catalogue serves it.

At the start of a mountain trail stands a wooden signpost naming the summit. Below it, the path itself begins: roots, stones, switchbacks, a long climb. The sign says nothing about the stones, yet it tells you why you are stepping over them. Dharma is that sign. The long inventory of substances, qualities and atoms that follows is the trail.

Read today, the sutra joins two questions that modern philosophy usually keeps apart. Since Hume, many philosophers have held that facts alone do not settle values: you cannot get an 'ought' from an 'is'. Vaisheshika links the two from its first line. Its ontology, the study of what kinds of thing exist, is carried out for the sake of the good. That is not an eccentric move. The Epicureans and Stoics also studied nature partly in order to live well. Many people still find that understanding how things work steadies them. What has no modern match is the claim that correct classification itself helps bring final release. That is a religious and philosophical thesis, not something physics or psychology tests. Whether knowing the world can change a life remains an open question.
