The Doors of Sense
Vijnana Bhairava 136
Meaning · English
Everything comes through the doors of the senses, and with it the meeting with pleasure, pain and the rest. Having let the senses go, one stays well in one's own self.
Three words carry it. Indriya is a sense, a faculty that takes in the world: seeing, hearing, touching and the others. Dvara is a door. So the first line says that whatever reaches you arrives through an entrance. Sangama is a coming together, a meeting. Pleasure, pain and the rest are not called things that sit in the world. They are met, at the moment something comes in through a door. Then the second line. Samtyajya means to give up or let go. The senses are let go, and the one doing it stays in svastha, which is also the everyday word for being well. Its parts are sva, own, and stha, standing: standing in your own place. That place is svatman, your own self. Every clause follows from the one before. If all of it comes by the doors, then at the doors you can see where each pleasure and each pain starts. Letting the senses go is not a new act added to life. It is the ordinary moment, a sound or a touch, looked at from where it enters. What is left when you stop going out to meet it is the one who was standing there all along.
A village water tank is fed by channels. Muddy water and clear water both come in that way, and the surface keeps stirring while the channels run. Where the inflow stops, the water settles and stays what it is. The channels are the senses, the incoming water is pleasure and pain, and the tank is the self that remains.
