Knower and Known Are One
Vijnana Bhairava 137
Meaning · English
Everything makes knowing shine, and through everything the self shines. Because each is of one single nature, knowing and what is known are seen as one.
Start with three words. Jnana is knowing, the act of being aware. Jneya is the known, whatever knowing lands on. Atma is the self, the one who is aware. Prakashaka means that which lights up. The first line says everything lights up knowing: a cup, a sound, a worry each makes awareness show itself. The second line turns it around: through all of these the self is what lights things up. So the light is not kept somewhere apart from its objects. The third line gives the reason. Each is of one nature, ekasvabhava, so there are not two substances, a knower in one place and a world in another. The last line follows from that: knowing and known are seen as one. This works as a doorway because nothing has to be set aside. An ordinary moment of seeing a table or hearing a bell already contains the whole matter. You open that moment from inside, by noticing that the awareness in it and the thing in it are not made of different stuff.
A lamp is switched on in a dark kitchen. The cup, the table and the window each appear, and the same light touches all of them. Nobody can point to where the light stops and the lit cup starts. Knowing is the light, the known things are where it lands, and the verse says they are one nature.
