When the Four Run Out

Vijnana Bhairava 138

Meaning · English

Mind, awareness, power of knowing, and the sense of self: these are the four. When, beloved, they are worn away completely, then what remains is Bhairava's own form.

Four words carry the verse. Manasa is the mind that thinks and doubts. Chetana is plain awareness of things as they show up. Shakti is the power that lets you know and act. Atma here is the self you take yourself to be, the one who says 'I'. Together they make a set of four. Parikshina means worn away, used up, thinned to nothing, like a coin rubbed smooth. The verse then says the four are exhausted, and when that happens, what is left is vapu, a body or form, and it is Bhairava's. Bhairava is the name for the reality the goddess asked about. Nothing new is added or reached. The text says only that this form is what stays when the four are gone. The word 'beloved' shows Bhairava answering her question warmly and directly. It works as a doorway because the four are not outside you. They are the ordinary workings of any moment: a thought, a noticing, a capacity, a sense of 'me'. Watching them from inside until they wear thin is the opening the text offers. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, since it is not printed with this verse.

Think of a tide going out from a rock pool. Water, weed, small fish and foam all drain away, and the rock itself stands bare where it always was. The four are what drains off, and Bhairava's form is the rock that was under them the whole time.
