One Hundred Twelve, Briefly Told

Vijnana Bhairava 139

Meaning · English

Briefly, goddess, I have told you a hundred and twelve teachings on the waveless. A person who knows them becomes truly knowing.

Nistaranga means without waves: nistara is a ripple or wave, and the prefix takes it away. It names the mind when nothing stirs on it. Upadesha is a teaching placed close to you, a pointing. Jnana is knowing, and jnanavit is one who has found that knowing, not one who has only heard of it. Bhairava closes by counting. He has given a hundred and twelve teachings, and he says he gave them briefly, in compressed form. Each one points toward the same still water. He calls the person who knows them jnanavit, so the count is not a list to memorize. It is a set of doors, and the one who has gone through them is the one he names. They work because each begins in an ordinary moment, a breath, a sound, a glance, a pause, and opens it from inside until the stillness underneath shows. Nothing is added to you. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, since it is not printed with the verse.

Think of a pond with a hundred and twelve paths leading down to its edge. Each path starts from a different house, a different yard. Walking any of them, you end at the same flat water. The paths are the teachings, the pond is the waveless mind, and knowing means standing at the edge.
