Vijnana Bhairava 140
Meaning · English
Joined to any one of these, a person becomes Bhairava himself. Whatever he does, he does by word alone, and his speech can bring a curse or a blessing.
Three words carry the verse. Yukta means yoked or joined, like an ox fastened to a cart. It describes staying fixed to one thing, not touching it now and then. Bhairava is the name of the one who speaks, and also the name of what the listener is said to become. Shapa is a curse and anugraha is a favor or grace. They are named as a pair, so speech can go either way. Now the clauses. Atra points back to the teachings just summed up, so the first half says that a person joined to even one of them becomes Bhairava, with no gap left between the two. The second half says that such a person carries out actions through vācā, speech alone. Whatever he says takes effect, whether it harms or favors. This works as a doorway because Bhairava never asks for a special place or a separate life. The teachings he has given all start from the ordinary moment, such as a breath, a glance or a pause between thoughts, and open it from inside. So one is enough. The text does not say the others must be added.
Picture a round well with a stair running down its wall. Many steps are cut into the stone, and you can stand on any of them. Each one is a different height, yet whichever you take, you go down to the same water. The steps are the many teachings and the water is Bhairava.
