Who Does the Worship?
Vijnana Bhairava 143
Meaning · English
Given what has been said of this state, who is invoked, and what is the invocation? Who is meditated upon, great lord? Who is worshipped, and who is satisfied?
Devi asks five questions in a row, and each one tests a familiar act of worship. Japa is quiet repetition of a sacred sound. Dhyana is holding a form in the mind. Puja is offering to a deity, and trpti is being satisfied, the sense of a need met. Her phrase "Mahanatha" means great lord, the one she is asking. The opening words, "given what has been said of this state," matter most. Bhairava has just described a being who is free while alive and unstained while acting. She asks what is left of the usual acts if that is the case. Each question has the same shape: who, and what. If there is one reality and no second thing standing apart, then a repeater, a repeated word, a worshipper and a worshipped one seem to need two. She leaves the questions open and does not answer them. Her asking is the doorway. The ordinary acts are put on the table, and Bhairava's reply, which closes the passage, will open them from inside rather than throw them out. Shivopadhyaya's commentary is not quoted here, so no reading of his is given.
Picture a child pointing to the cup of tea in her hands and asking who is pouring, who is drinking, and who is warmed. The tea, the pouring and the warmth are all happening in one small moment. The questions take the single moment apart into roles. Devi does the same with worship: she asks where the roles go when the reality is one.
