Meaning · English
Who is offered to in the fire, and what is the fire offering? Who is the sacrifice, what is it, and how? Bhairava said: This procedure is outer, doe-eyed one, and belongs only to gross things.
Devi's question has two halves. Homo is the fire offering, from a root meaning to pour out. Yaga is the larger sacrifice, from a root meaning to worship by giving. She asks who receives, what is given, who performs it, and how. If the knower is already free while acting, she wants to know what is left of the one who offers and the one offered to. Bhairava's reply begins with one word for the usual way of doing these things: prakriya, a procedure that goes forward step by step. He calls it bahya, outer, and says it holds for sthula things, meaning solid, thick, coarse. Ladle, butter, flame and altar are all things you can point at. So he does not call the rite false. He says its steps happen out in the world of objects. The question stays open, and the answer after this opens it from inside. The offering, the one offering and the fire are no longer three separate things placed in front of you. They are looked at as they occur in your own awareness, in an ordinary moment.
Scaffolding stands around a house while the outer wall is repaired. The planks and ladders are real, and they suit the wall. They do not tell you what the rooms inside are like. The outer rite is the scaffolding, and the question Devi asks is about the rooms.
