Sound That Sounds Itself
Vijnana Bhairava 145
भूयो भूयः परे भावे भावना भाव्यते हि या । जपः सोऽत्र स्वयं नादो मन्त्रात्मा जप्य ईदृशः
Meaning · English
Turning again and again to the supreme state, the feeling you hold there is the repetition. Here the sound sounds of itself. What is repeated is mantra in its own nature, and it is like this.
Three words carry it. Bhavana comes from the root bhu, to become: it is a feeling held so long it turns into how you are, more than a passing thought. Japa is ordinary repetition, murmuring a phrase over and over. Nada is sound, and svayam means of itself. Now the clauses. Again and again you return to the supreme state, the pare bhava. That returning, the held feeling, is what counts as japa here. No lips are needed. The sound in this repetition is not made by you. It sounds on its own. And what gets repeated is the mantra's own nature, not a string of syllables. This answers Devi's question about who repeats and what is repeated. The repeater and the repeated are not two things set apart. The reason it works as a doorway is that repetition is something you already know how to do. Bhairava keeps the habit and changes what it rests on: each return to the state is the repetition. The ordinary act is opened from inside, and nothing new is added to it.
A bell is struck once and then left alone. The ring carries on without a hand on it, and a light touch now and then keeps it sounding. Each return to the supreme state is that touch. The ring is the sound that sounds of itself, and it is the mantra's own nature.
