Meditation Without a Picture

Vijnana Bhairava 146

Meaning · English

Meditation is a steady mind, without form, resting on nothing. It is not the picturing of a body, of eyes, a face, hands and the rest.

Three words carry this. Dhyana is meditation, from a root for holding the mind on one thing. Buddhi is the mind that discerns and decides, and here it is called nishchala, unmoving. Kalpana is imagining, the making up of a picture. The verse sets steadiness against picture-making. Meditation is the mind held still. It is nirakara, with no shape, and niralamba, with nothing under it to lean on. So the mind is not fixed on a form and not propped on a support. Then comes the denial: dhyana is not building a body, eyes, a face, hands and so on in the mind. That is the usual way to sit with a deity, and the text sets it aside as the thing meditation is not. The doorway is the mind you already have. Every moment it moves, grips something, makes an image. The text points at the same mind with the gripping dropped. Nothing new is brought in. The ordinary mind is opened from inside, and its stillness is the practice itself.

Shake a snow globe and the flakes swirl everywhere. Set it down and do nothing, and they fall until the water is clear. You never add a thing to the globe. The clearness was there, covered by motion. The steady mind is the settled globe, and the pictures of hands and faces are more shaking.
