Worship Is Resting
Vijnana Bhairava 147
Meaning · English
Worship is not flowers and the like. It is the mind made steady in the vast sky free of thought. That is worship, because there the mind dissolves in loving regard.
Pooja is the word for worship, and the verse starts by saying what it is not: flowers and offerings. Then it names what it is. Mati is the mind's settled sense of itself, and here it is made drdha, firm. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, the splitting of experience into this and that, so a mind in nirvikalpa is not sorting or naming. Mahavyoma is the great sky, an open space with nothing fixed in it. So worship is the mind held firm in that open sky. The last clause says why this counts as worship: adara is regard, a respectful attention, and laya is dissolving. The mind does not hold something up in front of itself and honor it. It melts into what it attends to. Every clause of the verse is about the mind, and none is about the hands. Flowers are set aside, and the act of worship is moved inside the moment of steady attention. That is the doorway by the text's own logic: no new place or object is needed, because the ordinary mind, once it stops splitting things up, is already standing in the open sky.
Think of sugar stirred into hot tea. At first you can see the crystals, separate and sharp. Then you look again and the tea is simply sweet, with nothing left to point at. Worship in the verse is the sugar's kind of ending: the mind stops being a separate grain offering something, and is taken into what it faces.
