The story · English

After Akrura had witnessed the divine form of the Lord in the water, Krishna withdrew that vision, as an actor ends his performance. Astonished, Akrura returned to the chariot. Krishna smiled and asked, 'What wonderful thing have you seen on earth, in the sky, or in the water that has left you so amazed?' Akrura replied with devotion, 'O Universal Soul, when I look upon you, what else is there left to be wonderful? In you, I see all the wonders of the earth, the sky, and the water.' With these words, the son of Gandini urged the horses forward, and by sunset, he brought Krishna and Balarāma to the gates of Mathura.

Near the city, they met Nanda and the other cowherds who had come to wait for them. Krishna took Akrura by the hand and told him, 'You should enter the city and go to your home first. We will wait here and enter later.' But Akrura was distressed. 'I cannot enter Mathura without you, my Lord. Do not abandon me, for you are the lover of your devotees,' he pleaded. He begged the brothers to visit his home and purify it with the dust of their feet, noting that such a blessing would satisfy his ancestors and the gods. Krishna promised him, 'I shall come to your house with my brother, after I have slain the enemy of the Yadus and done what pleases my friends.'

The following afternoon, Krishna and Balarāma entered Mathura, surrounded by their cowherd friends. They saw a magnificent city with a high crystal gateway and massive golden doors. The city was protected by deep moats and beautiful gardens, with palaces adorned with diamonds, emeralds, and pearls. As the two brothers walked the main road, the women of the city rushed from their homes to see them. Some were so captivated that they forgot to dress properly or put on both of their earrings. Krishna looked at them with a playful smile, and his gaze brought a wave of joy to the hearts of those who saw him, as if they had found a hidden treasure of bliss.

While walking, they encountered a washerman. Krishna asked him for some high-quality clothes that would suit their stature, promising that great good would come to him if he gave them. However, the washerman, emboldened by his service to Kansa, became arrogant. He mocked them, asking if they thought the clothes of the forest were not enough or if they were foolish to crave royal garments. He warned them that the royal family destroys those who are too proud. In response to this insolence, Krishna struck the washerman, and his head fell to the ground. The man's assistants fled in terror, leaving the clothes, and the brothers put on those they liked. Then a weaver gladly dressed them in colourful cloth, and they looked like two young elephants, one white and one black. Krishna granted him a form like his own and great prosperity.

Finally, they visited the home of the garland-maker, Sudama. Upon seeing them, Sudama fell prostrate on the ground in reverence. He offered them seats, water for their feet, garlands, betel and sandal paste, declaring that his life and lineage were purified by their arrival. He recognized them as the ultimate cause of the universe who had come for the welfare of all beings. When Sudama asked how he could serve them, Krishna and Balarāma accepted his garlands and offered him boons. Sudama chose steady devotion to Krishna, friendship with his devotees, and deep compassion for all living beings, and Krishna granted these, along with wealth, strength, long life, fame and beauty, before the brothers departed from his home.
