The impressions that send the mind outward are overcome, and the impressions of holding still appear. The mind follows along with that moment of holding still. This is the change of the mind toward restraint.

Four terms carry the sutra. Vyutthana is a rising out: the mind going outward after sights, sounds and plans. Nirodha is a holding still, a restraint. Samskara is an impression left by past experience, a groove that pulls the mind the same way again. Parinama is a change, a passage from one state of the mind-field (citta) into another. Kshana is a single moment. Patanjali says the outward-going impressions are overcome, and the impressions of holding still appear. In that moment the mind follows along with the holding still. That passage is the change called nirodha. Every word is accounted for: two kinds of impression, one giving way and one arising, and the mind keeping pace with the second. Why say it? The sutras before set restraint of the mind's turnings as the aim of yoga. A reader would then ask how a mind that always runs outward comes to rest. Patanjali answers in terms of impressions: a restraining impression takes the place of the outgoing one, moment by moment. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way: the mind is carried along by the moment of restraint, and its change is the rise of these restraining impressions as the outgoing ones weaken. The later commentators broadly follow him.

At the turn of the tide, the sea running out slows, hangs at the shoreline, and then the incoming water begins. The old pull weakens before the new one takes hold. The outgoing impressions are the ebb, the restraining impressions are the flow that follows, and the mind is the water.

1. Choose one ordinary gap today, such as the minute after finishing a task and before starting the next. 2. Sit or stand still for two minutes and do not reach for your phone. 3. Notice the pull to move on: a plan, a sound, an urge. Notice, too, any moment when that pull is weaker than before. 4. Do the same at the same time tomorrow and notice again.
