Calm Carried By Habit

Yoga Sutras 3.10

Meaning · English

Of that holding, the flow of the mind runs calm and undisturbed, carried along by the impression that repeated holding leaves behind.

Three terms carry this sutra. Prashanta means calmed, settled, free of disturbance. Vahita means a flowing, a carrying along, like water moving in a channel. Samskara means an impression, a trace left in the mind by what it has done, which makes the same act easier next time. "Tasya" points back to the holding of the mind just described in 3.9. So the sutra says this: when that holding is repeated, each round leaves its own impression, and the impressions pile up until the mind's flow runs calm of its own accord, without effort at each moment. Patanjali says this because 3.9 describes a mind that is held only in single moments. A moment is not yet a steady state. The sutra answers how a brief holding becomes a lasting one. It rests on the older teaching that impressions shape the mind, so the mind can be shaped by calm as well as by restlessness. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, reads it this way: the calm flow of the restrained mind depends on the impression of restraint. When that impression is strong, the calm continues. When it is weak, the impressions of the outward-going mind take over again. The commentators who came later follow him on this point.

A footpath across a lawn. The first walk leaves nothing. After many walks the grass lies flat, and feet follow the line without choosing it. The path is the impression, and the walking that goes along it is the mind's calm flow.

1. Choose one short, repeatable moment each day, such as the first minute after sitting down with your tea or before you open your phone. 2. In that minute, let your attention rest on one thing, such as your breath or a sound. When it wanders, return it without scolding. 3. Do this at the same time for a week. Each evening, notice only whether the moment feels any easier to enter than it did on the first day.
