Scatter Fades, Focus Rises
Yoga Sutras 3.11
Meaning · English
The mind's reaching toward every object wears away, and its gathering on a single point rises. This turning of the mind-field is its change into samadhi, full absorption.
Three words carry the sutra. Sarvarthata is "all-objectness": sarva is all, artha is object or thing. It is the mind's habit of running to whatever comes. Ekagrata is "one-pointedness": eka is one, agra is tip or point. It is the mind resting its whole weight on one thing. Kshaya and udaya are a pair: a wearing away and a rising. Samadhi is a putting together, a gathering so complete that the mind stays with its object. Parinama is a turning, a change of the mind-field from one state into another. Taken whole, Patanjali says the mind's scattering over all objects dwindles while its single-pointed gathering arises, and that exchange is the turning into samadhi. Nothing is added from outside. One tendency fades and the other grows in its place. Patanjali says this because the sutras before it describe the mind being brought under control and settling into an even flow. He now names what that settling amounts to as a change in the mind itself. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the two as the mind's own qualities: scattering is its spread over all things, one-pointedness is its fixity. As one is overcome and the other appears, the mind follows samadhi. The later commentators follow him on this.
A flashlight swung around a dark yard lights everything a little and nothing well. Held steady on one spot, the same beam shows that spot clearly. The wandering light is the mind spread over all objects. The held beam is one-pointedness.
1. Choose one small task today, such as washing a cup or reading a page, and give it five minutes. 2. Each time your attention jumps to something else, notice where it went. Do not scold it. 3. Bring it back to the task and carry on. 4. At the end, recall which moments felt scattered and which felt gathered.
